Understanding the difference between binding and non-binding estimates helps you avoid surprises and feel confident on moving day. Here’s how each option works.
Binding Estimates
A binding estimate means the price listed on your estimate is the maximum amount you will be required to pay at delivery, as long as the move includes only the items and services originally agreed upon.
If you decide to add items or request additional services, you and RELOQ Moving Services may choose one of the following options:
- Keep the original binding estimate as is
- Create a new binding estimate that reflects the added items or services
- Convert the binding estimate into a non-binding estimate
If we do not agree in writing to one of the options above before your items are loaded, the original binding estimate remains in effect.
At delivery, you will not be charged more than the binding estimate for the items and services listed on it.
Additional or Unforeseen Charges
In some cases, unexpected conditions at pickup or delivery — such as stairs, elevators, long carries, or required parking permits — may result in additional charges. These may be billed after delivery, with payment due within 30 days.
Charges related to impracticable operations (such as unsafe access or conditions that prevent normal moving procedures) are due at delivery and may not exceed 15% of the total charges due at delivery. Any remaining balance will be invoiced and payable within 30 days.
If full payment of a binding estimate cannot be made at delivery, your shipment may be placed into storage at your expense until payment and any applicable storage fees are resolved.
Please note: a fee may apply for preparing a binding estimate.
Non-Binding Estimates
A non-binding estimate is an educated projection of your moving costs. It is not a guaranteed price, but it must be based on a realistic assessment of your shipment and requested services.
Your final cost will be determined by:
- The actual weight or volume of your shipment
- The services performed
- RELOQ Moving Services’ published tariff rates
Because of this, the final price may be higher or lower than the estimate provided.
Non-binding estimates are always provided in writing and clearly outline the items and services included.
Payment Terms
At delivery, you cannot be required to pay more than 110% of the non-binding estimate. Any remaining balance will be billed after delivery, with payment due within 30 days.
Changes on Moving Day
If additional items are added on the day of pickup, RELOQ Moving Services must, before loading:
- Reconfirm the original non-binding estimate, or
- Prepare a new non-binding estimate that includes the added items
If no agreement is reached, the mover is not required to proceed with the move.
If you are unable to pay 110% of the non-binding estimate at delivery, your shipment may be placed into storage at your expense until payment and applicable fees are settled.
Your Rights as a Customer
You are entitled to receive your shipment if you pay:
- 100% of a binding estimate, or
- 110% of a non-binding estimate, plus
- Up to 15% of impracticable operation charges, if applicable
Failure to release your shipment after these payments are made is a violation of federal law.
